In partnership with Eastern Health, techNL is hosting a webinar to discuss the plans to establish a Centre of Excellence in healthcare cybersecurity at Eastern Health: an exciting prospect that will impact the innovation capacity of Newfoundland and Labrador.

EH, with support of two levels of government, HealthcareCAN, the national voice of healthcare organizations and hospitals across Canada, and other partners has been embarked on an initiative aimed at establishing a Centre of Excellence ( COE ) in healthcare cybersecurity at its main facility in St. John’s. The strategy builds on a year-long ‘strategic dialogue’ with the cybersecurity and technology ecosystem of Israel and its world-renowned approach to converting technological obstacles into industrial innovation success. The COE would entail at its core:

  • The establishment of a Security Operations Centre (SOC), a sophisticated data monitoring and analytical system designed to protect digital assets of EH. The SOC will constitute state of the arts IT technological components and associated highly skilled personnel;
  • A training arena alongside the SOC: a sophisticated platform for education, training and skills development on IT systems, signal analysis and overall advanced capabilities in digital technologies;
  • A medtech innovation centre which would include equipment testing, R&D and associated capabilities;
  • Most importantly, a management overlay aimed at integrating all of this with the education/training and innovation ecosystem of the province as well as with its business community, especially tech-based industries represented by techNL.

This initiative is reaching an important phase in its progress, ie. an open call of a Request for Information (RFI) that is expected to be issued by Provincial Supply Chain on behalf of Eastern Health within the next few weeks. Preliminary discussions with prospective respondents indicate great excitement by industry to participate in the RFI call and, in doing so, demonstrate the interest of industry in building and operating the COE as a critical pilot, a ground-breaking new approach to respond to the growing threat posed by cyber attacks on healthcare systems. The COE concept’s integrated approach will result in important ‘spillover’ benefits of the installed technological capabilities; these offset the costs and turn them into strategic investments.

The COE will be a Canada-first pilot supported by and watched carefully across Canada ( and globally ). Its success will brand the province as a leader in this field. As Canada prepares for post pandemic economic recovery, it is clear that a safe, resilient and innovative healthcare system will be an important part of that preparation and, in fact, become a key comparative advantage of regional and national economies. The COE can, therefore, play a key role in the economic resurgence of Newfoundland and Labrador.

For techNL companies, the COE can represent an important opportunity; the purpose of this webinar is to discuss these opportunities in the context of the RFI and the steps following. For these reasons, we are co-hosting this special presentation with EH on the essence of this project, its rationale, strategic importance and how the industrial innovation community of Newfoundland and Labrador can become involved in the process going forward.
